In most states, a lienholder is given possession of the title until the lien is completely satisfied. The only way for the owner of the vehicle to obtain the title is by satisfying the loan. This can make registering vehicles difficult, as an original title is often required for registration. Writing a letter to the lienholder to request that the title be forwarded to the titling agency can help the owner obtain the title for this purpose.

Step 1

Write your name and return address in the top three lines of the letter. Skip two lines.

Step 2

Insert the complete date (month, day, year). Skip two lines.

Step 3

Enter the recipients name, title, company name and address on the next five lines. This information should be found on the payment receipt from the lienholder. If no individual is listed, include the company name and address over three lines. Skip two lines after this information.

Step 4

Greet the reader by writing "Dear (recipients name):" Skip two lines.

Step 5

State the subject in a subject line. For example, "Subject: Release of Title." Skip two lines.

Step 6

Explain the situation clearly and concisely. Specify why the title is required and include the name and contact information of the agency that you want a copy of the lien to be released to.

Step 7

Include all necessary identifying information, such as your name, account number and a description of the property that the lien is against. If the lien has been satisfied, explain how and when the terms were met.

Step 8

Conclude the letter with a polite demand that the title be released as soon as possible.

End the letter by writing "Sincerely" and sign the letter.

Tips

  • Enclose any documents that will expedite the process, such as a self-addressed stamped envelope for the company to return the title and letter in. Contact your local titling agency, such as the DMV, to see if there are any official forms that should be filled out by the lienholder. Obtain and include those forms when ing the letter.
  • If the lienholder refuses the request or is difficult to contact, inform the titling agency. The agency may be able to contact the company on your behalf, or find alternatives.
  • If the lien is due to a loan that is paid off, include the payment date and demand that a title and a letter explaining that the lien has been satisfied be sent to you immediately. Specifically ask that the letter be ed on company letterhead, describe the property the lien was against, and clearly state that the lien has been satisfied. The letter must be signed by an officer of the company.
