When cars start to get old, parts start to break, and sometimes youre not quite sure why. Take the A-pillar, for example. Its a piece of plastic between the windshield and the side windows that spends its entire life looking pretty. But if the plastic its made from has started to turn brittle, it may crack and break one day just because the temperature changed. Removing one isnt very difficult, and should take about 10 minutes to do. In this case, the project vehicle is a 1998 Chevrolet Silverado, but the process is similar for other vehicles.

Step 1

Open the door and position yourself on the passenger side of the vehicle. There is a grab handle on the passenger side pillar which has small plastic covers on it. Remove those covers using the flathead screwdriver.

Step 2

Unscrew the grab handle using the Phillips-head screwdriver and place it to the side.

Step 3

Pull down on the A-pillar using your hands to free the clips from the vehicle. The bottom of the pillar is held in place by plastic guiding tabs that slide into the dash, so wiggle the A-pillar to get it out of the dash.

Step 4

Unplug the speaker wire harness for the speaker in the A-pillar if your vehicle is equipped with tweeters in the A-pillars.

Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the drivers-side pillar.
