Contenu

Like many cars, the Lincoln LS has an integrated computer system which is designed to detect potential engine problems. When an issue has been identified, the system illuminates a "check engine" light on the dashboard, prompting the driver to service the vehicle as soon as possible.

In many cases, even after the problem has been resolved, the "check engine" light may remain illuminated. To turn off the light, the code must be cleared by resetting the Lincolns computer.

Step 1

Unlatch the Lincolns hood using the release lever located inside the passenger compartment. Raise and support the hood, exposing the engine.

Step 2

Locate the Lincolns battery, found on the drivers side. Identify the negative battery lead, which is black and imed with a minus sign. Using a wrench or socket set, loosen the stud running through the negative terminal hookup, and remove the cable from the battery. Depending on the age of the battery, you may need to wiggle the cable to break through layers of corrosion before it can be removed.

Step 3

Wait at least 10 minutes to ensure the computer has time to reset. During that time, ensure the cable is placed in a position where it no longer touches the negative terminal. After 10 minutes have passed, replace the battery cable and tighten it into place.

Close the hood, and start the engine. The computer system has been reset, the check "engine code" has been cleared, and the dashboard light should no longer illuminate.

Warning

  • Only remove the cable from negative battery terminal. Removing the positive one increases the chance of producing a dangerous spark.
