Ford four-wheel drive trucks come in several different packages, each named differently, and each with different options and specifications. The F150 4x4 and FX4 packages offered by Ford are very similar, but each have their own advantages.
The Origination of the FX4 Truck
Up until the early 2000s, Ford marketed its improved version of its regular 4x4 truck as the Off Road Package. Starting in 2002, Ford renamed it the FX4 truck, and has marketed it under that name since then.
Ford FX4 Distinctions
The FX4 trucks made by Ford have very similar specs to those of the regular 4x4 truck. However, there are some differences. The FX4 comes with an improved suspension, which includes skid plates, stronger Ranchero shocks, and a higher ground clearance, as well as a limited slip rear end. Most FX4 trucks come with automatic 4x4 shifting on the steering column.
Ford 4x4 Trucks
The F-series of 4x4 trucks made by Ford are the base four-wheel drive models. These come with standard suspension, lower ground clearance, and manual shifting into four-wheel drive.
