The ignition switch in the Buick is a five-position switch that is the distribution point for most of the cars electrical system. The five positions of the switch are off, lock, accessories, start and run. When the ignition switch goes bad, it will prevent the Buick from starting up. The Buick ignition switch is easier to replace than the starter.
Preparation
Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery to isolate the electrical system. This will prevent electrical shock. The ignition switch is inside the steering column. Remove the steering shroud to access the ignition switch. You will need a Phillips-head screwdriver to separate the shroud and expose the column. Unscrew the screws holding the shroud together and pull them out. Lift up on the top half of the shroud and separate it from the column. Then pull down on the bottom portion and work it loose from the column.
Removal
Locate the ignition switch settled along the steering column, and unscrew the small screws that are holding it to the column. Pull the wiring harness out of the back of the ignition. The harness will have a tab that you separate from the sides to pull away evenly from the switch.
Installation
Place the new switch where the old switch was positioned. Start the screws to ensure the switch is properly aligned. Tighten the screws with the Phillips-head screwdriver. Now attach the wiring harness to the new ignition switch. Push the harness into the receiving end of the switch until it clicks. Tighten the steering console shroud around the column. Reconnect the battery so you can start the Buick and ensure it cranks.
