Whether you are buying or own a vehicle produced by a GM brand (GMC, Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac), it is important to check if it has been recalled. There are a few ways you can search recall lists, but using the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is the simplest way to search the list. A VIN is a 17-character alpha-numeric combination which is used only one time and on only one vehicle; it is the way a vehicles history is tracked.
Telephone
Step 1
Locate your VIN number and write it down. Depending on the year your vehicle was made, your VIN is probably located on the drivers side dashboard. You can look through the windshield and see the number.
Step 2
Find the phone number for a local GM dealership in your phone book or search for the phone number online at General Motors Corporate website. After you select a GM brand, you can search GMs site by zip code, city and state or dealers name. You will be taken to another page with the dealers information.
Call the dealership and ask for the service department. Tell the representative you would like him to check your VIN number to see if a recall has been issued. He should be able to search while you wait.
Carfax
Step 1
Visit the Carfax website and click on the link that says "Recall Check" found along the bottom of your screen; the site will provide you the information at no cost. You will be taken to another page.
Step 2
Click on the GM brand vehicle you would like to check. GM is the parent company for GMC, Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac. You will be taken to another page.
Type the VIN in the search box and click the button labeled "Search." Another page will appear with the VIN, year, make and model of the vehicle, recall results and where to go to find out more information if there was a recall.
