The Ford 5.4-liter V-8 uses an individual coil for each spark plug. This improves efficiency by doing away with spark plug wires, which are relatively perishable. If you have determined that one or more of your coil packs have gone bad, replacing them is not difficult to do yourself.
Step 1
Remove the retaining bolts that hold the fuel rail. Pull up on it, and move it to the side. This will help you gain access to the coil packs
Step 2
Remove the bolt that holds the coil to the intake. Detach the electrical connector from the coil.
Step 3
Pull the coil from the plug, using a twisting motion.
Step 4
Apply a bit of dielectric grease to the inside of the coil boot. Push the coil onto the spark plug until you feel it snap into place. Reconnect the electrical connector to the coil.
Step 5
Replace the coil bolt and tighten it to 50 inch-pounds, using a torque wrench.
Replace the fuel rail and tighten its retaining bolts.
Tip
- Its best to replace coils in a set.

- 1/4-inch-drive long extension
- 1/4-inch-drive universal joint
