The Chevrolet Equinox was introduced in 2005 as part of General Motors radical new design approach to its mid-sized SUV offerings. The five-passenger vehicle had such initial success that dealers had difficulty retaining stock.
Canadian Chevy
The Chevy Equinox is manufactured in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada, in the joint GM-Suzuki CAMI factory. CAMI is taken from the corporations name, Canadian Automotive Incorporated.
CAMI History
Formed as an independently incorporated firm between Suzuki Motor Corporation and General Motors of Canada, CAMI began manufacturing GM and Suzuki compact cars in 1989. Production of the Chevy Equinox began in 2004 for the 2005 model year.
Production Facility
The CAMI factory has 1.7 million square feet of manufacturing space and has a production capacity of 250,000 vehicles per year.
Zero-Landfill
CAMI achieved "zero-landfill" status in March 2009, meaning that all byproducts of manufacturing are recycled or re-used. In 2000, CAMI registered with ISO 14001 for its Environmental Management System in anticipation of the zero-landfill status.
Other ISO Certification
CAMI is also registered as an ISO 9001 Quality Management System manufacturer. ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is an independent manufacturers registration body, which awards certification to applying companies that achieve international business practice standards.
