The Vortec 454, also referred to as the Vortec 7400, was designed as a big-block engine for light-duty trucks. General Motors manufactured this engine in 1996, but upgraded to a different model engine five years later. There were a few different trucks and full-size SUVs that came equipped this engine during the years it was on the market.

Engine

The Vortec 454 engine had 7,439 cubic centimeters, or 454 cubic inches, of displacement, giving it the 454 or 7400 name. It was an eight-cylinder engine with a multi-port fuel injector, and each cylinder had two valves that were operated by hydraulic roller cams. Each cylinder had a 107.95-mm bore and a 101.6-mm stroke. This engine produced 290 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 410 ft.-lb. of torque, and had a cast iron block and cylinder heads.

Transmission

This type of engine can be used with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission.
