The Hyundai Tiburon was produced from 1996 to 2008. This car was created to be a low-cost sport coupe. The name Tiburon, which means "shark" in Spanish, was discontinued after the 2008 production year; however, Hyundai continued to manufacture the car under the production name of the Genesis Coupe.
First Generation
The first-generation Tiburon was produced from 1996 to 2001. Cars in this generation were referred to as RD Tiburons. The car was created with a 1.8 liter, in-line four, cast iron engine with alloy heads. This engine has a bore of 3.23 inches and a stroke of 3.35 inches. The first-generation Tiburon engine has a compression ratio of 10.0 to 1.0 and is rated for 130 horsepower at 6,000 revolutions per minute and 122 foot-pounds of torque at 5,000 RPM. In 1998, Hyundai switched from the 1.8 liter engine to a 2.0 liter engine, which has the same bore and stroke as the previous engine but uses a 10.3 to 1.0 compression ratio. The 2.0 liter engine is rated for 140 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 133 foot-pounds of torque at 4,800 RPM.
Second Generation
The second-generation Tiburon was produced from 2002 to 2008. Cars in this generation were referred to as GK Tiburons. These Tiburons have a 2.0 liter, in-line four engine. The 2008 engine has a bore of 3.23 inches and a stroke of 3.68 inches. The engine uses a 10.1 to 1.0 compression ratio, and provides 138 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 136 foot-pounds of torque at 4,500 RPM. From 2003 on, a six-cylinder engine was offered as an option. This engine is a 2.7 liter engine with a bore of 3.41 inches and a stroke of 2.95 inches. The compression ratio of this engine is 10.0 to 1.0. The engine is rated for 170 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 181 foot-pounds of torque at 4,000 RPM.
Dimensions
Weighing 2,898 pounds, the Tiburon is 14.42 feet long with a wheelbase of 8.3 feet. It is 5.78 feet wide and 4.37 feet high. A total of 14.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity is available with all passenger seats in place.
Fuel
The Hyundai Tiburon has a fuel capacity of 14.5 gallons. Only 87 octane unleaded fuel is recommended for use in the car. The EPA-estimated fuel economy for the Tiburon in 2006 was 24 mpg for city driving and 30 mpg for highway driving.
Genesis Coupe
The Hyundai Tiburon was renamed the Genesis Coupe in 2009. This car was offered with two different engines in 2010. The base engine is an in-line four, 2.0 liter engine. It has 210 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 223 foot-pounds of torque at 2,000 RPM. The Genesis Coupe was also offered with a 3.8 liter, six-cylinder engine in 2010. This engine pushes 306 horsepower at 6,300 RPM and 266 foot-pounds at 4,700 RPM.
