Contenu

The steering column cover on the Chevy Silverado is divided into two pieces. The covers primary purpose is to protect the many components within the cover, such as the ignition switch and wiring. If you need to remove the steering column covers for any service to these parts, you can do so without having to disconnect the steering wheel itself. Removing the cover pieces is essentially the same for every year-model of this truck.

Step 1

Turn the steering wheel so both front wheels are facing forward then turn the ignition switch to the "Lock" position.

Step 2

Open the interior fuse box on the left side of the instrument panel. Remove the airbag fuse if the truck is so equipped and wait two minutes for the power supply to shut off.

Step 3

Pull out the tilt lever from the steering column if the truck is so equipped and detach it from its prongs.

Step 4

Inspect the lower steering column cover if you have a 2002 Silverado as some of these models have covers secured only by clips and not screws.

Step 5

Remove the screws for the lower steering column cover with a screwdriver if the cover has screws. Otherwise, grasp the bottom steering column cover and squeeze it lightly to remove it from its clips and detach it from the column.

Lift the upper steering column cover off of the column.
