The throttle control motor relay on a 2000 Nissan Maxima is designed to regulate power to the throttle control motor. The engine control module (ECM) activates the relay in order to open and close the throttle control motor, which allows air in and out of the throttle body to control the engine idle speed. When the throttle control motor fails, the engine may stall or have an erratic idle. Replacement relays are available from auto parts stores and Nissan dealers.
Step 1
Place the Maximas transmission in park (automatic) or first gear (manual). Shut off the engine, apply the parking brake and open the hood.
Step 2
Locate the relay control box inside the engine compartment. It is a black plastic box on the left side of the engine compartment, between the power steering fluid reservoir and the fender.
Step 3
Read the diagram on the cover of the relay control box. This diagram shows the location of the throttle control motor relay within the relay box.
Step 4
Depress the locking clips on both sides of the relay control box and remove the relay control box cover. Locate the throttle control motor relay according to the information ed on the relay control box cover. Remove the throttle control relay.
Install the new throttle control motor relay in the relay control box. Replace the relay control box cover and start the engine. Verify that the engine operates properly and the idle is stable.
