Removing the shock is a very easy task to do. The real task is that the Lincoln Town Car has a complicated suspension system, where the car rides on air bags. The air bags cushion the interior compartment from uneven roads or any obstruction that would cause your ride to be less than comfortable. The most important thing to remember is that if you raise the Lincoln, make sure the air bags are turned off. Failure to do so will result in tears in your air bags, and that will be a very expensive and time-consuming repair.

Removing the Shock

Step 1

Turn off the air suspension. Locate the switch in the trunk on the left. This switch has to be in the off position before raising the back end of the vehicle.

Step 2

Jack the left side of the car up. This will provide easier access. You can also remove the wheel.

Step 3

Locate the shock between the wheel well and the fuel tank. It will be located next to the air bag.

Step 4

Unscrew the top and bottom bolts holding the shock in place. The socket should be a ¾-inch socket.

Slide the shock out when the bolts are removed. You may need to tap the shock with a hammer to break it loose.

Tip

  • Removing the wheel is optional. You can remove the shock with the wheel on, but there will be less room to work.

Warning

  • Be careful as you are working on a raised vehicle. Be sure to chock the tires to help hold the vehicle in place.
