Unlocking the radio in a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox is a somewhat simple task. The 2005 Chevrolet Equinox is originally equipped with an RDS audio system, complete with AM/FM radio, CD player and six speakers. Unlocking the radio in this Equinox should take about one hour to complete, if you have never done this task. All of the tools needed for this job are available at an auto parts store.

Step 1

Remove the fastener screws from the bottom of the radio console cover. The screws are located at the bottom of the dashboard and can be removed with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

Step 2

Press a small flat-head screwdriver between the radio console cover and dashboard. Gently pry the console cover off the front of the radio.

Step 3

Remove the radio mounting bolts with a 1/4-inch drive ratchet and socket. Slide the radio out of the radio mounting bracket in the dashboard, until you can see the sides and back of the radio clearly.

Step 4

Locate and write down the serial number of the radio, and any other pertinent numbers you can find on the serial plate of the stereo. The serial number will be on a sticker located on either side, or the back of the stereo head unit.

Step 5

Call your local Chevrolet dealership service department. Supply them with the radios serial number. The service department should be able to provide you with an override code, or the actual code to unlock the radio. Write down the code or sequence of numbers that the dealership provides.

Step 6

Re-install the radio in the mounting bracket. Tighten radio mounting bolts between 15 and 20 foot-pounds of torque. You do not need to over tighten the bolts.

Step 7

Re-install the stereo console cover by pressing it in place and gently tapping the face so that it snaps back into the dashboard. Re-install the fastener screws at the bottom of the dashboard. These screws only need to be snug. Do not over tighten the screws, or you will crack the stereo console cover or break the mounting tabs.

Turn the vehicle to the "accessories" position, which is the key position right before you start the car. When the radio lights up with the word "LOCK" on the face, enter the sequence of numbers that the dealership provides you, along with any other buttons for programming the radio lock.
