Keeping the air clean has as many benefits in your car or truck as it does in your home and workplace. Most late model cars and trucks have a cabin air filter. These also help preserve the heater and air conditioner by keeping out dust and debris. You can service these filters yourself to maintain fresh and clean air for the life of your vehicle.

Step 1

Locate the filter, which is usually in the passenger foot well, behind the glove box or at the base of the windshield. If you have to remove the glove box, you may be able to remove it by pulling out the clips located inside the glove box near the hinges, or you may need to use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the hinges.

Step 2

Wash or replace your filter. If your vehicle is equipped with a cloth and carbon type filter, you can clean it by running it under warm water and hand washing it with a mild soap. If your vehicle uses a paper filter, it is best to replace it. You may, however, clean a paper filter by hand by pulling off any debris and shaking it out into a garbage can. Do not wash paper filters with water, which will ruin them.

Allow your filter to dry completely before reinstalling it.
