Adding or replacing the lights on a golf cart is easily accomplished by a handyman with basic skills and simple hand tools. The process is straightforward, whether for a gas- or electric-powered golf cart.

Step 1

Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

Step 2

Mount the headlights as high on the cart as possible for best visibility. Mounting brackets that simply clamp around a round structure, such as a bumper or roll bar, make this task simple.

Step 3

Determine the best place to mount the toggle switch that will control your lights. The left side of the dash is a common place for it.

Step 4

Drill a hole to mount the switch. Generally this will be a 1/2-inch hole, but check your switch to be sure the threaded portion will go through a 1/2-inch hole.

Step 5

Connect one lead of the inline fuse holder to the positive terminal of the battery with a solderless ring terminal.

Step 6

Use a butt connector and extend the other lead of the inline fuse holder to the center terminal of the toggle switch. Connect it to the switch with an insulated female spade terminal.

Step 7

Run a 16-gauge wire from the second terminal of the toggle switch to the headlights. Connect it to the headlights using solderless butt connectors.

Step 8

Tape over all connections with electrical tape and secure all wiring with nylon wire ties.

Step 9

Mount the toggle switch in the hole you drilled earlier.

Step 10

Reconnect the negative battery terminal.

Turn the toggle switch to the "on" position to test your lights.
