Knowing your vehicle weight is important. In some cases, the DMV may need the vehicles weight to properly classify and register your vehicle. In other instances, you may need to know the weight of your vehicle to help determine the amount of weight you may add to the vehicle so as not to exceed the vehicle Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). The GVWR rating is the total amount of weight a vehicle may carry including the weight of the vehicle, passengers and cargo. You can find the weight of your vehicle by looking in a few places, as the location varies.

Step 1

Check the "Tire and Loading Information" plate located inside the frame of the drivers side door. Many manufacturers will stamp the weight of the vehicle on this plate.

Step 2

Lift your hood and locate the plate affixed to your engine. Some manufacturers will stamp the weight of your vehicle on the engine plate.

Refer to your vehicles owners manual if you cannot locate the weight on either plate. The owners manual will specify the weight of your vehicle along with the GVWR. If you have added equipment such as a truck camper to your vehicle you will need to add that weight to the number you find in your manual or on the plate fixed on the vehicle.
