Contenu

The tow hitch is usually located underneath the rear of the vehicle, and is attached to the frame. Removing a tow hitch is a fairly simple process that can be done in about an hour using a few common shop tools. Because of the weight of the tow hitch and the position underneath the vehicle, use caution and safely support it while removing the bolts.

Step 1

Park the vehicle on a level surface away from traffic, turn off the engine and engage the emergency brake. Slide under the rear of the vehicle and locate the bolts that secure the tow hitch to the frame.

Step 2

Place a jack, jack stand or large wooden block under the hitch to support it while you are loosening the bolts.

Step 3

Unfasten the wiring harness if it is attached and stow it within the vehicle. Loosen the bolts with a socket wrench and remove all the hardware holding the tow hitch to the frame.

Tap the hitch with a rubber mallet to loosen it and remove it from the vehicle.

Warning

  • Be careful to support the tow hitch while removing the bolts so it does not fall on you.
