The PCM, or powertrain control module, in your Chevy truck serves as the on-board diagnostic computer for your vehicle. The PCM controls everything from air-to-fuel ratio to generating fault or trouble codes for critical vehicle systems. If your PCM fails your Chevy truck can experience a wide range of problems. The only way to diagnose a faulty PCM is to use a special tool, called an on-board diagnostic scan tool, or "OBD" scan tool. These tools are available from most auto parts stores.

Step 1

Locate the OBD port in your Chevy truck. In your Chevy, the port will be located to the left of the fuse panel. You may or may not need to remove the fuse panel depending on your model and year of Chevy truck.

Step 2

Plug the OBD scan tool plug into the OBD port.

Turn the ignition key to the "II" position and read the OBD scan tool screen display. A reading of: "P0600," "P0601," "P0602," "P0603," "P0604," "P0605," "P0606," "P0607," "P0608," "P0609" or "P0610" indicates a critical failure of the PCM in your Chevy truck. The PCM will need to be replaced.
