Tires specially designed for hot weather are called summer tires. These tires are made from a special rubber which is softer in consistency than snow or all-season tires. Summer tires increase vehicle performance. Summer tires are expensive and need to be replaced on a more frequent basis than other types of tires.
Michelin Pilot Sport PS2
The Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 is standard on Porsche and Corvette vehicles and is a favorite of Car and Driver Magazine for hot weather. The tire braking traction capacity has been rated "AA," the highest rating allowed. A run-flat model allows drivers to maintain control of the vehicle in the case of a flat tire. Drivers claim the tire enhances their driving experience. It retails for $200 per tire.
Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec
The Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec runs a close second to the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 as a preferred hot weather tire, according to Car And Driver Magazine. Dunlop encourages use of the tire in events like autocross, drift and track racing. Drivers state the Direzza provides road grip without the need for a long warm up period. External tire grooves provide traction in wet conditions. Steel belts provide internal tire strength; and two-ply polyester sidewalls make for better road handling. It retails for $130 per tire.
Eco-Friendly Tires
There are environmentally friendly tires specifically made for hot weather. The Yokohama dB Super E-spec is made mostly of orange oil. The tire retails for $150 per tire and is available in four sizes. The Bridgestone Ecopia EP100 retails for $100 per tire. Both tires outperformed the Goodyear Integrity, which retails for $90. Eco-friendly summer tires use up to four percent less gas than a traditional all-weather tire.
