Temporary license plates in Ohio are provided for a fee and can be used for use for up to 30 days by the owner of a newly purchased vehicle. Tags may be purchased through a dealership after a sale, or by the new owner after a private, or casual, sale. At the end of the 30 days, a permanent license plate must be purchased.

Step 1

Determine the need for a temporary license plate. A temporary tag may only be issued if a new owner doesnt have valid plates available to transfer to the new vehicle.

Step 2

Visit any Deputy Registrar office in the state of Ohio. Be sure to bring the properly notarized title of the vehicle and your current valid drivers license. Be prepared to pay the temporary tag fee of $18.50 (as of February, 2010).

Step 3

Order temporary tags with Fax-N-Go through the dealership. Dealers can help after a sale by placing an order through the Bureau of Motor Vehicles Fax-N-Go service. Faxed orders are available the next day. Some dealers may have tags available immediately.

Order online through the Ohio Auto Dealers website (see link in Resources). Auto sellers will need their user ID and dealership permit number to access the online ordering for temporary tags.
