A gas smell in a car can be powerful. This odor can make you and your family sick or have an unpleasant ride and ruin the upholstery in the vehicle. If you accidentally poured some gas in your car or you have a small gas leak, you can remove the smell so you are not sick while driving to work, school or the store. You may already have the tools in your home to get rid of the gas smell.

Step 1

Clean the car completely. Remove all of the garbage, any items that do not belong in the car and important paperwork or receipts. If you have a gas can in your car, clean the outside of it and place it in the trunk.

Step 2

Rub baby oil on any spilled gas stains on the upholstery and the carpet. Baby oil will bring up the gas from the car and help reduce the stench. Since gas has an oil base, another oil assists in getting rid of it.

Step 3

Take your washcloth and dip it in the bowl of hot water. Gently rub the hot water into the gas spots. Dip your washcloth into the hot water again and wipe off the upholstery as well as the carpet. This will help remove any loose dirt or debris.

Step 4

Squeeze a dime-size amount of dishwashing soap on your washcloth. Use a circular motion to work the soap into your upholstery or carpet where the gas spots were located. This will bring out the oils in the baby oil as well as the gas.

Step 5

Rinse your washcloth in the hot water and wring it out. You want all the soap residue off the cloth. Then wipe the dishwashing soap out of the carpet and upholstery. Rinse out the cloth and repeat until all of the soap is removed. Let dry before moving on to step 6.

Sprinkle the carpet powder all over the seats and carpet of the car. Let this sit for about 10 minutes, then vacuum it up. Be sure to remove all the powder. Repeat this process if you still have a hint of the gas scent.

Tips

  • You can also use Febreeze or another type of spray to give an added fragrance to the vehicle.
  • Do not sprinkle the carpet powder on a wet surface.
