Like most convertibles, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder uses a canvas convertible top. Though canvas is a strong material, it can also require replacement if it incurs any damage. Though top replacement is relatively simple, it is best left to people with some understanding of cars. An improperly installed top may lead to leakage or interior damage. Some parts sellers also offer vinyl tops in addition to canvas tops. Its worth noting, though, that vinyl tops may be cheaper but they require replacement more frequently.
Step 1
Tape newspaper onto your Spyders windows and windshield using masking tape. This will protect your windows from damage during the replacement.
Step 2
Remove the clips from the rear deck using a Phillips-head screwdriver. Remove the Phillips screw using the screwdriver. Set the screw and clips aside.
Step 3
Remove the clips on the rain rail using a socket wrench. Remove the nuts on the rain rail using a socket wrench. Pull the rear bars away from the Spyder.
Step 4
Grasp the front of the Spyder convertible top and pull it towards the front of the car. Remove the screws on the Spyders set pate using a slotted screwdriver. Pull the molding away from the spyder, pulling it outwards. Remove the fabric rivets that connect the convertible top to the rest of the car using a rivet gun.
Step 5
Remove the Spyders convertible top by gently pulling it from the car. Clear any snagged parts of the convertible.
Place the new convertible top over the rain rail. Reattach the rivets using a rivet gun. Reassemble the rain guard using a screwdriver. Reattach the remaining parts of the convertible top, in the opposite order that you removed them.
