Contenu

The vehicle speed sensor on the Mitsubishi Eclipse is located on the transmission--in most years, just behind the shift linkage. The computer supplies 5 volts to the speed sensor. When the output terminal is opened--and grounded--the signal generates a pulse signal and s it back to the computer. The computer uses this signal to operate various other controls on the Eclipse, including shift points and cruise control. Without the vehicle speed sensor, the Eclipse will not run properly.

Step 1

Open the hood.

Step 2

Locate the vehicle speed sensor on the side of the transmission, near the shift linkage.

Step 3

Unplug the sensor by pulling the tangs on either side of the plug away from the connector, then pull the connector off the plug.

Step 4

Unbolt the speed sensor, using the appropriate socket.

Step 5

Install the new sensor and tighten the bolt firmly.

Plug in the sensor, ensuring that the connector snaps into place.
