The KIA Spectra has a light notifying you when your brakes need to be changed. Changing the brake pads on a KIA Spectra is not hard, but you will have to be somewhat mechanically inclined. The entire task takes less than an hour and doing it yourself can save you some cash.

Step 1

Park the vehicle on level ground and apply the parking brake. Secure the vehicle by placing blocks behind the rear wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling.

Step 2

Loosen the lug nuts using a wrench. Jack the car up and support the front of the vehicle with the jack stands. Place the jack stands at the lift points, located under the rocker panels.

Step 3

Using a turkey baster, siphon the brake fluid from the master-cylinder reservoir. Siphon until it is approximately one-third full.

Step 4

Remove the wheel from the caliper guide-pin bolts using a flat-head screwdriver. Lift the caliper away from the rotor and suspend the caliper from the frame using mechanics wire.

Step 5

Remove the brake pads and retainer spring from the caliper. Compress the caliper piston into the bore using tool number OK9A4263001.

Step 6

Replace the brake pads. Use an anti-squeak product on the outside of the brake pads. Be sure not to get any of this on the inside of the brake pads. This can damage the pads causing them not to work.

Step 7

Reinstall the retainer spring to the caliper. Reinstall the caliper in position on the caliper-support bracket. Reinstall the guide-pin bolts. Reinstall the wheels.

Step 8

Add the brake fluid. Start the engine and pump the brakes three to four times.

Test drive the vehicle at slow and moderate speeds. This will ensure that the maintenance was performed properly.

Warnings

  • Do not clean the brake parts with compressed air or a dry brush. This could damage the brake pads and assembly.
  • Do not over-tighten the lug nut bolts but be sure they are secure.
