Hyundai automobiles are manufactured with alternating generators, which power the ignition system and accessories. The belt-driven alternator can wear out and require replacement, which involves removing the belt from the pulley and unbolting the mounts. The average backyard mechanic can replace an alternator on a Hyundai in about 30 minutes.
Step 1
Disconnect the battery from the car by turning the positive terminal bolt counterclockwise and setting it aside. Disconnect the alternators positive post(s) by turning the nut(s) counterclockwise and taking the ring terminal from the bolt.
Step 2
Press firmly on the tension pulley arm until the serpentine belt can be moved out from underneath the idle pulley. Release the arm and the belt will slacken enough to take it from the alternator pulley.
Step 3
Turn all mount nuts counterclockwise while holding the bolt heads stationary with a socket wrench. Slide the bolts from the mount arms and the alternator can be manipulated out of the engine compartment.
Step 4
Replace the alternator by positioning it into the mount arms and sliding the mount bolts into the holes; tighten all mount nuts clockwise.
Step 5
Wrap the belt around the alternators pulley and press the tension pulley arm to slide it back under the idle pulley. Release the arm and the belt will tighten to the proper tension.
Reconnect the alternator positive post by placing the ring terminal onto the bolt and turning the nut clockwise. Reconnect the battery by turning the positive terminal nut clockwise.

- Replace the unit with a high-output model if using a lot of accessories.
