General Motors Corporation (GMC) manufactures Chevrolet cars and trucks, Buick cars and SUVs, and Cadillac cars and SUVs. Replacing the accelerator cables in these vehicles is the same in each one, as all the accelerator cables are installed in the same way. The accelerator pedal that operates the accelerator cable is located on the right side of the steering column.

Removing the Accelerator Cable

Step 1

Raise the hood of your GMC vehicle and prop it open. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a wrench and lay aside. Remove the air cleaner housing that holds the air filter, using a Phillips screwdriver.

Step 2

Disconnect the accelerator cable from where it connects to the throttle body, using a pair of pliers. Rotate the throttle lever to take the cable through the slot in the throttle lever. Follow the cable back to the mounting bracket. Press the locking tab and push the cable housing through the bracket.

Step 3

Remove the cable from the routing retainers. Take the trim panel from under the dashboard and remove the accelerator cable from the accelerator pedal by pressing the lock tab in the cable housing. You need a Phillips screwdriver and a pair of pliers.

Remove the cable by pushing it through the firewall and into the engine compartment. Take the cable and lay it aside. Check all brackets and routing retainers to be sure they are OK.

Replacing the Accelerator Cable

Step 1

Run the accelerator cable from the engine compartment through the firewall. Place the cable through the slot in the retainer on the accelerator pedal and press the lock in place. Replace the trim panel under the dashboard.

Step 2

Route the accelerator cable through the routing retainers. Attach the cable to the mounting bracket by sliding it through the slot in the bracket and pressing the lock in place.

Attach the accelerator cable end to the accelerator lever by rotating the lever and placing the cable through the slot in the lever. Release the throttle lever. Clean the battery cable end and the battery post. Replace the cable on the battery and tighten with a wrench.

Warning

  • Always disconnect your negative battery cable when working on your car.
