Ford dealerships can provide replacement keys for Ford Rangers. They can also reprogram a new set of coded keys when the original is lost or stolen. Replacing Ford Ranger keys is usually a straightforward process.
Step 1
Visit your local Ford, Mercury or Lincoln dealership for a replacement key code. Show two forms of identification. Acceptable forms of identification include a valid drivers license and a picture I.D. issued by the state.
Step 2
Show documentation to prove ownership of your Ford Ranger. The document should include the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and your name. Acceptable documents include vehicle registration, insurance documents and a bill of sale.
Step 3
Obtain a set of regular or coded keys for your Ford Ranger. According to Ford, the dealerships can provide key codes for 1998 models and newer. Key codes for older models may be unavailable.
Have a locksmith duplicate the key for your 1997 or older Ford Ranger. This is the only option if the dealership cannot provide the key code for your older model.
Tip
- If your coded key is stolen and you do not have a duplicate, Ford suggests towing your Ford Ranger to a Ford, Lincoln or Mercury dealership. An agent can erase the key code from the car and program a new one.
