Contenu

Convertibles have tops made of fabric, rather than metal, and some tops have vinyl windows. Like any other vinyl element, this window can tear. The damage can be repaired using a vinyl patch along with a few other materials, all of which can be purchased from hardware stores.

Step 1

Clean the vinyl to remove any buildup along its surface. Use a mild detergent and warm water solution on a soft sponge to clean the damaged area.

Step 2

Cut off any loose vinyl pieces within the tear to make it perfectly round, or square, for a better, cleaner looking repair.

Step 3

Measure the size of the tear.

Step 4

Cut the patch to twice the size of the tear. This leaves more room for the adhesive application and will also cover more of the surface area over the damage.

Step 5

Paint a thick layer of adhesive onto one side of the patch. Both sides are the same.

Place the patch over the tear, and then press down. Hold it in place for a minute or two until you feel it start to dry and bind with the vinyl window. Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to dry before moving the convertible top
