With changes in epoxy resins and plastic composites, it is possible for you to repair cracks and holes in plastic tanks. The bond created with the plastic epoxy is almost equal to a plastic welded repair, without the need to purchase or rent an expensive hot air gun, filler rod and speed tips. Although the epoxy resin is fuel resistant, you will need to properly prepare the surface of the plastic tank to ensure a long-lasting repair.

Step 1

Empty the plastic tank and ensure that the exterior of the tank is dry and free of chemicals.

Step 2

Scuff the area around the hole in the plastic tank with the 200-grit sandpaper to help the plastic epoxy adhere to the surface of the tank.

Step 3

Wipe down the scuffed area with a clean, dry rag to remove dust and debris from the surface of the plastic tank. Ensure that that there is no residue left on the gas tank, as this could result in an improper seal between the plastic tank and the plastic epoxy.

Step 4

Mix the two-part epoxy as per the manufacturers instructions.

Step 5

Apply the thoroughly mixed epoxy to the hole in the gas tank. If the hole is large, place the enclosed fiberglass mesh over the hole before you apply the plastic epoxy to the plastic tank.

Step 6

Smooth the epoxy to ensure a sealed bond between the epoxy and the surface of the plastic tank.

Step 7

Allow the epoxy to cure for the time specified in the application instructions.

Step 8

Fill the plastic tank with water and check the fixed hole to ensure that there are no leaks coming from around the hole.

Drain the water from the plastic tank and allow the inside of the tank to dry before refilling it.
