Transponder keys are used in vehicles that have computer chip programming within the vehicle. Typically, transponder keys are already programmed for your car when you purchase it, but if you acquire a new transponder key for your vehicle it is not programmed. Transponder keys that are already programmed have the code to your specific vehicle coded inside the keys. To remove the current transponder key coding you must enter the programming mode for your vehicle, which erases the current codes held by your transponder keys.

Step 1

Use your transponder key to turn your car on. Push either the "Lock" or "Unlock" button on the key fob within four seconds of turning on the ignition.

Step 2

Turn the ignition to the off position and then turn it back on.

Step 3

Repeat this step four times to enter programming mode, which removes the key coding on all your transponder keys. If you are successful entering the programming mode, your door locks will lock and unlock one time as an indicator.

Exit your vehicle with your now uncoded transponder keys.

Tip

  • To reprogram your keys, review the programming process in your vehicles instruction manual.
