If you are planning to install a new windshield or want to repaint your Ford truck, you will have to remove the trim around the windshield. The black rubber gasket is what holds the windshield in while the windshield trim is just the painted or chrome 1 inch thick strip around the perimeter of the windshield. The windshield trim is just glued to the frame of the truck that surrounds the windshield. Removing the trim is very easy, but make sure not to bend the trim too much as you are removing it as it may leave crimps in the trim, and you wont be able to re-use it.
Step 1
Start at a bottom corner of the windshield. Slide the putty knife under the edge of the trim corner.
Step 2
Slowly pry the corner up. The trim splices together at the corners via a notch in the trim corner. Slide the corner pieces apart by gently pulling the vertical piece toward you. Continue to pry the trim up by sliding the putty knife along the trim edge and prying it free from the glue.
Step 3
Pry the windshield trim off around the entire windshield. Pry it up from the side if you want to preserve the trim because, if you just grab an end of the trim and pull up, you will create kinks, unsightly bend marks and weak spots in the trim.
Step 4
Apply mineral spirits to a rag. Always keep the rag moist with mineral spirits.
Circularly scrub any excess glue residue off of the Ford truck frame where the windshield trim was.
