The injector pump on a diesel engine pushes the fuel to the engine and makes sure its at the proper pressure. If this pump fails, the engine wont get the fuel it needs to run. To fix the problem, the diesel injector pump must be taken off of the vehicle and replaced with a new one. This repair should take less than an hour to complete.
Step 1
Lift the front of the vehicle with the jack and put it onto jack stands. Locate the injector pump, which is typically on the drivers side framerail. Open the drain valve at the bottom of the fuel filter/water separator in the engine bay with your hands to lower the fuel pressure.
Step 2
Unplug the harness running to the injector pump. Disconnect the quick-disconnect clips leading to the injector pump with your hands. Pull the brake lines off of the clip mounted to the injector pump with your hands.
Unbolt the injector pump from the frame with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Pull the pump off the frame and out of the frame bracket, then take it out from underneath the vehicle.
