Ford introduced its first American-built compact pickup, the Ranger, in the 1982 model year. The 1999 Ranger came standard with a 119-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive. The 1999 Ranger had an optional four-wheel-drive system and a limited-slip rear differential available. When servicing the rear differential, it is important to know its capacity and the type of fluid needed to prevent damage to the axle.
Standard Rear Axle
The standard rear axle on the 1999 Ford Ranger requires SAE 80W-90 that meets Ford specification No. WSP-M2C197-A. The axle has a maximum capacity of 5.0 to 5.3 pints.
Traction-Lok Limited Slip Rear Axle
The 1999 Ranger had an optional limited slip rear axle available, known as a Traction-Lok axle. This axle has a maximum capacity of 4.75 to 5.0 pints. The Traction-Lok axle uses the same SAE 80W-90 gear oil as the other Ranger axles, but it requires 4.0 ounces of a friction modifier that meets Ford specification No. EST-M2C118--A.
