If your Nissan Xterra transponder key has suddenly quit working, there are a variety of possible reasons. But more than likely, it was reset by another electronic device, such as another key, an automatic toll radar or an electronic payment device thats kept on your keyring. Nissan makes allowances for these common problems by allowing Xterra owners to reprogram their keys without expensive trips to the dealership.
Step 1
Remove any device that can cause electronic interference with your key from your key chain or your car. This includes radar detectors, electronic payment devices and any transponder keys that do not go to your Xterra.
Step 2
Enter your vehicle. Put your key into the ignition and turn it to the "On" position. Leave it there for five seconds.
Step 3
Turn the ignition switch to the "Off" position and wait 10 seconds.
Step 4
Repeat Step 2 and then Step 3. This resets your key.
Restart your engine.
Tips
- If your key does not reprogram and is still giving you problems, try replacing the battery. A local watch shop can replace it for you, or you can do it yourself by visiting your local drugstore and buying a watch battery.
