You can program a new key to the Ford Escape without visiting a Ford dealership or a locksmith. However, you need two programmed keys to do so. Therefore, the at-home procedure to program Escape keys is only helpful if you are programming an extra key. Visit an authorized Ford dealer if you have less than two programmed keys; the service department can connect the vehicle to the Ford software tool to program the key.
Step 1
Find both of your programmed keys. Sit inside the Ford Escape. Insert either of the programmed keys into the ignition slot. Examine the ignition slot.
Step 2
Learn the key positions. The notch that the key rests in when you first insert it is position one. Turn the key forward once. This is position two. Turn it forward again; this is position three. Position four cranks the engine. Its not necessary to become familiar with it to program a key.
Step 3
Turn the key back to position one. Then turn it to position three. Leave it in position three for between three and 10 seconds. Turn it back to one, and then remove it.
Step 4
Insert your other programmed key within 10 seconds of removing the last key. Turn it from position one to position three. Leave it in position three for between three and 10 seconds. Remove it.
Insert the key you are programming. Turn it to position three. Leave it in position three for at least six seconds, and then remove it. The key should now be working. Try to crank the engine with the new key. If it does not work, the programming procedure was done incorrectly. Try again.
