All states require a vehicle inspection that basically checks to make sure that your car is in good working order. This is to keep you and other drivers safe. If an emissions check is also performed, this is to make sure that your car, truck, or SUV, is not putting out too much pollution.

Whether we like them or not, state inspections are required annually. Many owners of older vehicles get nervous come inspection time hoping that their car will pass.

I will help you give yourself the best odds of passing and getting a good inspection sticker!

Step 1

Change your oil and oil filter. Make sure that you are either using a synthetic blend or fully synthetic oil.

Step 2

Change your air filter so that your engine will "breathe" easier and give you cleaner ignitions in the pistons.

Step 3

Check your tires for too much wear, and for heavy signs of cracking. IF they are bad, replace them. Worn tires can often cause vehicle inspections to fail.

Step 4

Check your headlights, stop lights, tail lights, and high beams. Also check your blinkers, reverse lights, and license plate light. If any light is out, be sure to replace it. State inspections require lights and blinkers to be functioning properly.

Step 5

Check your windshield wipers and make sure they are good. They cant be falling apart or cracked. Turn them on and make sure that they both work. A good state inspection auto mechanic will check these.

Step 6

Make sure that your horn works!

If your check engine light is on, you can most likely turn it off with an OBD II scanner. Sometimes small things set these off which dont really matter. A state inspection can fail due to a bad or faulty code being set off.

Tip

  • Make sure the inspector places the inspection sticker on correctly!

Items you will need

  • Time to inspect the car yourself, and money for any parts you may need.
