The amount of transmission fluid a car can hold is dependant on the model, make and size of the car. It also matters if the car has a standard or automatic transmission. Each vehicles owners manual lists the correct amount of transmission fluid that its engine can hold.
Amount of Fluid
While the type and exact amount of transmission fluid are dependent on the model of the vehicle, most passenger vehicles take approximately 12 to 16 qts of transmission fluid. The level of transmission fluid can be checked either with a dipstick or by lifting the car and checking the fluid from underneath the vehicle.
When To Change
Manufacturers recommend a change in transmission fluid for manual cars after every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. For automatic cars, a change in transmission fluid is required less frequently, from 60,000 to 100,000 miles.
Potential Harm
Allowing the car to run low on transmission fluid can cause the transmission to shift improperly or to not shift at all. Low transmission fluid can also cause harm to the internal parts of the transmission by not providing proper lubrication.
