An essential part of engine care involves regular oil changes and refills. For John Deere engines, there are certain motor oils that the company recommends. One of these is the John Deere PLUS-4 oil, which comes in SAE 10W-30 or 10W-40 grades. John Deere has also approved some oils that may be used in its place.
John Deere Brands
Besides the PLUS-4, two other John Deere brands of oil may be used. One is the Turf-Gard Multi-Viscosity 4-Cycle Motor Oil. It can be used in any lawn mower, tractor, shredder, edger, generator or tiller with a four-cycle engine. Another is John Deeres Torq-Gard oil. This high-performing oil is recommended for high-speed four-stroke gasoline and diesel engines. Brands of oil other than John Deeres may also be used to replace the PLUS-4, so long as they exceed certain American Petroleum Institute standards.
Sunoco
Another company that manufactures motor oil compatible with John Deere is Sunoco. For example, the Sunoco Catralube Range oil is designed to protect engines and transmissions. It reduces gear wear, improves friction control, and may extend the life of transmissions and brakes. There is an SAE 10W-30 grade that may be used in place of the John Deere PLUS-4.
Exxon
Exxon also produces motor oils that meet John Deeres standards. One example is the Exxon Superflo, which has a 10W-30 grade that meets the highest American Petroleum Institute standards. Superflo is designed to prevent high-temperature deposits, oil thickening, and wearing down of the camshaft and hydraulic valve. Though it is commonly used with automobiles, it meets the standards for use with John Deere engines.
