Five-cylinder engines are among the rarest engine configurations in the automotive world, but Chevrolet decided to use this oddity in its Colorado lineup. The 3.7-liter, five-pot engine provided a good balance between fuel economy and power, as its mileage was nearly the same as the midsize pickups base, four-cylinder engine, and it cranked out a respectable 242 horsepower and 242 foot-pounds of torque in the 2012 model.
Fuel Economy
With two-wheel drive, the 2012 Chevrolet Colorado with the four-cylinder engine received EPA fuel economy ratings of 18 mpg city, 25 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined with either the automatic or manual transmission. With four-wheel drive, the manual transmission and four-cylinder engine, the 2012 Colorado got 18 mpg city, 24 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined, while the automatic transmission-equipped model got 17 mpg city, 23 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined. With the mid-range, five-cylinder engine, the 2012 Colorado got 17 mpg city, 23 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined with two-wheel or four-wheel drive.
