OBD-II (On-Board Diagnostics) systems use internal sensors and an on-board computer to monitor your vehicles performance. The computer gathers information and performs routine tests at various points of operation to ensure the proper operation of your vehicle. Any deviation from the expected performance generates an OBD-II error code. Reading the code requires a code reader, available from any auto parts retailer, connected to the OBD diagnostic link connecter. The 1995 Honda Civic mounts the connection beneath the dash in the drivers side compartment.

Step 1

Lean into the floor area of the drivers side compartment while holding the code readers cord.

Step 2

Reach along the steering column, and behind the dash panel. The OBD-II diagnostic link is mounted to the wiring harness just to the left of the steering column.

Step 3

Connect the code reader to the connection. Modern vehicles use a universal connection so the reader will connect to the diagnostic link by pressing the two connections together.

Step 4

Turn the key to the "ON" position, but do not start the vehicle.

Turn the code reader on. Any stored codes will be displayed on the screen of the code reader. Consult your repair manual or the owners manual for the code reader to determine the meaning of each code.
