Many Toyota vehicles have its gas filter--more commonly known as a fuel filter--in a unique location. While still connected to the fuel rail, the 1999 Corolla filter is near the engine, unlike many other manufacturers that locate the filter near the gas tank. Although the original filters from the Toyota Motor Corporation are made of aluminum, oftentimes the replacement filters are made of a plastic shell with an internal micro-papered filter inside.
Step 1
Apply the parking brake to the 1999 Toyota Corolla after it has been placed in park or in gear.
Step 2
Release the primary hood release latch from inside the Corolla, located on the drivers side dash.
Step 3
Lift the hood up until the secondary hood latch catches the hood, and slip a hand between the hood and the grill in the center to locate the secondary latch. Lift up on the latch to unlock the hood.
Step 4
Lift the hood, and then locate the hood prop rod on the drivers side fender rail. While holding the hood with one hand, lift the hood prop rod and align its tip into the hole on the drivers side of the hood.
Step 5
Locate the brake master cylinder on the drivers side of the engine compartment connected to the firewall. This is the reservoir where the hydraulic brake fluid is stored for the braking system and is directly in front of the steering wheel in the engine compartment firewall.
Look beneath the master cylinder on the firewall and locate the aluminum cylindrical canister-shaped fuel filter bracketed to the rear of the engine compartment. This is the gas filter.
