A block heater helps keep your cars fluids -- particularly engine block fluids -- from freezing. In turn, keeping these fluids warms aids in successful ignition on extremely cold days. Most cars sold in climates that experience severe drops in temperature during the winter months come pre-equipped with a block heater. Locating the block heater in a Pontiac vehicle is an easy task, so long as you know where to look.
Step 1
Turn off your Pontiacs engine and allow it time to cool, prior to working under the hood.
Step 2
Open the hood and secure it in position using the prop rod. Locate the radiator on the passenger side of the engine compartment.
Step 3
Pull out the plastic-wrapped cord directly in between the radiator and engine compartment. Unwrap the plastic wrap and remove the twist tie binding the cord.
Step 4
Follow the cord to locate the block heater; this cord is the direct line that provides electricity to the block heater to create heat which keeps engine fluids from freezing.
Plug the block heater cord into an extension cord and lower the hood to initiate the block heater. Remember to unplug the cord before leaving in your Pontiac the following morning.
