Foreign cars are automobiles that originate in countries other than the United States. These cars can be found throughout the United States and they are oftentimes manufactured locally as well. However, unlike cars that originate in the United States, such as Ford and Chevy, foreign cars that are built here are manufactured in plants of companies that are based abroad.

Volkswagen

A manufacturer based in Germany, the Volkswagen company has earned a prominent place in American culture. The Beetle was a staple among automobile models of the 1960s. Other models that Volkswagen has both sold and produced in the United States include the Jetta, Golf, Passat and Touareg.

Nissan

Nissan is a Japanese car company that produces models such as the Altima, Maxima, Armada, Pathfinder, Xterra and more. This company is renowned for its low cost of production and thus for relatively affordable prices.


Ferrari

Ferrari specializes in sports cars. Based in Italy, Ferrari produces expensive vehicles that have proved popular in America among wealthy car owners. The cars are renowned for their low to the ground construction.

Lamborghini

Like Ferrari, the Lamborghini is an Italian sports car built with affluence in mind. Lamborghini was sold to Audi in 1998, and it is a popular brand for wealthy car owners not only in America but also around the world.

Rolls Royce

Another expensive car, the Rolls Royce originated in Great Britain with the Rolls Royce Limited. The company actually specializes in aircraft engines, giving it notoriety for power when it comes to automobile engines.

BMW


BMW is a German car company. The letters BMW stand for Bayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works). As a subsidiary of Rolls Royce, BMW is known for its luxury cars, notably the Z4 Roadster, the M3 Coupe, the X3, the 3-Series and the MINI.

Mercedes Benz

Also from Germany, Mercedes Benz produces popular luxury cars in America. Its models are named according to classes. The C-Class is a sedan, the M-Class is an SUV and the R-Class is a minivan. The famous popemobile used by the Roman Catholic pontiff is a Mercedes Benz vehicle.

Porsche

In operation less than 100 years, Porsche is another German car company that sells well in America. Porsche produces luxury vehicles such as the Boxter, the 911, the Cayenne and the Cayman.

Mazda

Mazda is a Japanese company that produces popular American models such as the RX, the B-Series pickup truck, the CX and the Miata. The company earned fame for its "zoom zoom" marketing campaign.

Honda

The Honda is one of the most affordable foreign cars in America. Popular models from the Japanese company include the Accord, the Acura, the Civic, the Odyssey, the CR-V and the Element.
