A lien is a legal tool that holds partial or total ownership of a piece of property. In general, a lien placed on an automobile is taken out by the financing creditor to ensure the borrowing consumer does not transfer or sell the vehicle without repaying the loan. In Missouri, auto liens are governed by the state Motor Vehicle Titling and Registration office, part of the Department of Revenue.

Step 1

Visit the website of the Missouri Department of Revenue (see Resources). Click on the "Motor Vehicle" tab.

Step 2

Locate "Forms & Manuals" on the right side of the page.

Step 3

Scroll down to locate "Application for Title and License, Form 108." Download and complete Form 108 using the vehicles make, model and Vehicle Identification Number.

Mail the form to the Missouri Motor Vehicle Bureau, P.O. Box 100, Jefferson City, Missouri 65105. The title application search, which will reveal any liens on the automobile, will be returned to you by mail.
