The Kawasaki Mule 550 is an compact off-road utility vehicle that offers a mix of the off-road versatility of an ATV and the storage and hauling capacity of a small pickup truck. Controlling the engine and drivetrain is an automatic transmission with three gears: forward, neutral and reverse.

Four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes are standard equipment on the Mule. The vehicle is constructed using a tubular frame that also serves as a roll bar safety device. It has an overall length of 103 inches with a wheelbase of 66.2 inches. Its overall height is 70.5 inches and has a width of 50.9 inches. A total of 6.3 inches of ground clearance are offered. With the 4.2-gallon fuel tank empty, the Mule has a dry weight of 785 pounds.
