Contenu

Originally known as the VT 275, the International 275-cubic-inch diesel engine was first produced in 2006. Since then, this engine was been used in many mid-sized International and Ford trucks. Sometimes described as a V-8 engine with two cylinders cut off, the V-6 delivers a maximum of 200 horsepower. In 2007 the name of this six-cylinder diesel engine was changed to the Maxxforce 5, when it appeared in Ford LCF (low cab forward) and International CF (cab forward) models.

Overall Engine Specs

Also known as a Navistar engine, the compact, 4.5-liter V-6 International diesel takes up little space under the hood, while putting out plenty of power. The six cylinders produce 200 units of horsepower at 2,700 rpm and 440 foot-pounds of torque at 1,850 rpm. The engine has a compression ratio of 18 to 1, with a bore diameter of 3.74 inches and a stroke length of 4.134 inches. The oil system holds 13 quarts including the filter, and idle speed is 700 rpm with a high idle of 3,300 rpm. There are four valves for each cylinder and six glow plugs for the entire engine.

Twin Turbochargers

One of the most interesting aspects of the Maxx Force 5 and VT275 engines are the twin turbochargers installed at the front end of each row of cylinders. With the 275 engine, each turbocharger has a specific function. One is used when the engine first moves forward and the other provides extra power during acceleration at a high speed. When the turbocharged engine is combined with an automatic transmission, the result produces a diesel-powered truck that behaves and handles more like a SUV or light pickup than a larger truck. The small size of International 275 engine allows it to be placed in small engine compartments, where the V-6 can provide plenty of power to the vehicle

Other Pertinent Info

Sometimes known by the trade name of Navistar, this engine is often found in mid-sized Ford and International trucks, as well as many military and combat vehicles. An important difference between the 2006 Navistar VT 275 and the subsequent Maxxforce engines is that the latter are compliant with EPA emission regulations. The International Company also makes several larger, big-bore diesel engines, including the 9.3-liter I-6, capable of producing 375 horsepower at 2,000 rpm.
