The transmission in a Jeep is identified by an identification plate. This plate is stamped on the housing of the transmission and the location can vary, depending on the model year of your Jeep. The numbers on the identification plate provide the build date, part number and the build date. However, you need to determine the location of the identification plate for the model year of your Jeep.
Step 1
Raise the front of the vehicle off the ground with the car jack.
Step 2
Place jack stands under the frame, behind the front wheels. Lower the car jack until the vehicle rests on the jack stands.
Step 3
Lay down on the mechanics creeper and use your legs to position yourself under the engine. You will find the housing for the transmission at the back of the engine.
Step 4
Look near the filler plug at the bottom of the transmission housing. If the plate is not found there, it may be located on the left side of the transmission.
Step 5
Look above the oil pan on the left side of the housing. If the plate is not found there, it may be located on the right side of the transmission.
Make a note of the numbers on the plate. The first line will be the model number, the second line will be the part number and the third line will be the build date.
Tip
- The last line on the transmission tag is the gear ratio.
