In the automotive con, a voltmeter gauge displays the number of volts stored by the vehicles battery. Many vehicles, particularly older cars, are equipped with only a dashboard light that illuminates when the battery voltage falls below a normal level. Sunpro manufactures volt gauges that instead feature a needle that moves across a numbered dial to indicate exactly how much voltage the battery has. Although Sunpro produces a number of volt meters that look different, the process of hooking up the gauge is the same regardless of the external appearance.
Step 1
Crimp a closed-eye connector to both ends of an 18-gauge insulated copper wire with wire crimpers.
Step 2
Attach one end of the wire to a clean ground source, such as a metal panel. This wire will serve as the ground wire. A common mounting location is against the interior-side of the firewall or within the engine compartment. Locate a bolt tightened into a panel. Remove the bolt with a wrench and insert the shaft of the bolt through the closed-eye wire connector, then tighten the bolt into the panel.
Step 3
Attach the remaining end of the ground wire to the negative terminal on the back of the voltmeter. The negative terminal features a "---" symbol below it. Slide the closed-eye connector onto the terminal and tighten a nut over the connector with a wrench.
Step 4
Crimp a closed-eye connector to one end of an 18-gauge insulated copper wire with wire crimpers. This wire will serve as the positive wire.
Step 5
Insert the exposed tip of the positive wire into a terminal within the fuse box that receives power when the ignition key is turned to either the ON, START, or ACC positions. Turn the ignition key to one of these settings and touch the wire to a terminal within the fuse box until the voltmeters needle moves, then turn the key off. Repeat the process until the voltmeters needle falls to a "zero" reading when the ignition key is turned off.
Attach the remaining end of the positive wire to the positive terminal on the back of the voltmeter. The positive terminal features a "+" symbol below it. Slide the closed-eye connector onto the terminal and tighten a nut over the connector with a wrench.
