Contenu

With the demand for smaller and more fuel efficient cars growing in the late-1980s and early-90s, General Motors needed to get into this market. It did this by entering a joint agreement with Suzuki to manufacture the Geo Metro.

Horsepower

The Metro had several engine options in it eight years under the Geo name. From 1989 through 1994, the base 1.0 liter produced 49 horsepower (hp) and the "high-output" engine produced 55 hp. From 1995 through 1997, the base engine increased to 55 hp and the "high-output" 1.3 liter produced 70 hp.

Torque

Both of the Metros engines--from 1989 trough 1994--produced 58 pound-feet of torque. From 1995 through 1997, the Geo metros base engine produced 58 pound-feet of torque, while the "high-output" produced 74 pound-feet.

Economy

When designing the engines for the Metro, the main concern was fuel economy. With the changes the Metro underwent, the fuel mileage change greatly. The base engines ranged from 30 to 53 mpg in the city and 34 to 58 mpg on the highway. The "high-output" engines got 30 to 46 mpg in the city and 34 to 50 mpg on the highway.
